Liam Ottley, who's built multiple AI businesses over the last few years, keeps making the same point to people trying to break into AI automation: you don't need to be an AI expert to start. You need to sell one automation to one specific type of business, then do cold outreach to find your first few clients.
That's it. Not a portfolio of ten different AI skills. One narrow automation, one narrow niche, sold directly.

It sounds too simple to work, but it matches what I've actually seen building 100+ systems for real businesses — real estate, healthcare, solar. Nobody hired me because I could talk about every AI model or every framework. They hired me because I could fix one specific, painful, expensive problem in their business: missed calls, slow follow-up, manual intake. The depth came later, after the first few clients, not before.
If you're stuck trying to "learn AI" before you feel ready to sell anything, that's the trap. Here's the actual starting sequence:
- Pick one type of business you already understand a little.
- Pick one process in that business that's obviously broken.
- Learn to automate just that one thing.
- Find five businesses exactly like it and ask if they want the same fix.
Expertise gets built by doing the work for real clients, not by studying before you start.
