Most AI coding agents are goldfish. Close the terminal and the memory is gone. Open a new session and you are back to explaining your whole project from zero, again. Run more than one agent and they cannot talk to each other, so you end up being the message bus between them by hand.

An agent that forgets everything overnight is not an agent. It is a chatbot with extra steps.

01. The problem with most AI agents

What breaks the flow

Four things, in the order people usually hit them: it forgets everything the moment the session ends, it stops the second you close the terminal, it works completely alone with no way to hand off part of the job, and every single day you re-explain the same project context from scratch.

NORMAL AGENT terminal closes memory gone, start over PRIME AGENT keeps running memory saved, sub-agents talk to each other
Same job. One remembers, one does not.

02. What Prime Agent actually fixes

Built by Prime Intellect, MIT license

GitHub: github.com/PrimeIntellect-ai/prime-agent

Prime Intellect open sourced Prime Agent on August 6, 2026, fully MIT licensed. It stores memories, skill descriptions, and reusable subagent specifications as durable state, and it refines that state through small, evidence-backed updates instead of throwing it away every session. Sub-agents can message their immediate parent, child, and sibling instances directly, so you can actually split a job across a team instead of running everything through one thread.

  • Persistent memory: what it learns about your project stays learned.
  • Keeps running: background execution continues after you close the terminal.
  • Multi-agent by default: parent, child, and sibling agents can message each other directly.

03. Install it

macOS or Linux

One command. The installer downloads a versioned release and verifies it against a checksum before installing the prime-agent command.

# macOS / Linux
curl -fsSL https://app.primeintellect.ai/prime-agent/install.sh | sh

04. Log in

Subscription or API key, your choice

First launch, run the login command from inside the tool and pick a subscription or an API-key provider.

prime-agent
# then, inside the session
/login

05. Run it on a real project

It works in the folder you start it from

Prime Agent operates inside your current directory, so cd into the project first.

cd /path/to/your-project
prime-agent

06. Commands you will actually use

Session management

  • prime-agent agents, browse your running sessions.
  • prime-agent attach <agent>, reattach to one that is still running.
  • prime-agent --resume [path|id], pick up a session where it left off.
  • prime-agent status, check what the service is doing right now.

07. One thing to know before you trust it

Prime Agent executes model-generated Python and project commands with your user permissions. It is not a security sandbox. Review what it changes before you let it run unattended on anything that matters.

That is not a reason to skip it, every agent that can actually do things carries this tradeoff. It is a reason to start it on a project you can afford to watch closely the first few times.
